THE MAURICIOS FROM BULACAN. When Dodoy Mauricio and Rosemarie Miller were not yet married, I would always tag along with Dodoy around Iloilo and got to meet, and talk with, his father Dr. Virgilio Mauricio, then Director of the REgional Bureau of Hospitals based in Iloilo City. Dr. Mauricio spoke to me in Spanish and I learned that he was a descendant of a Chino Cristiano from the "Sector de Mestizos" (or Parian) of Malolos, Bulacan. At the beginning, his surname was "San Mauricio" but a great grandfather later dropped the "San". The Mauricios were of Chinese stock but were Spanish citizens as most of the Chinos Cristianos were during Spanish times. . The Chino Cristiano was the one called "Mestizo" during Spanish times. We should all go visit Malolos one day and see it's old "Sector de Mestizos" with its "Calle Parian". You can spot Dr. Virgilio Mauricio in his son's wedding photo with Rosemarie. And Dodoy was always with us in Calle Bonifacio with Mama Rosita, my father and mother, Tito Quining, tita Chitang Vital, mother of former actress Nancy Kines (now Velez from Cebú). Upon Catholic baptisms all Chinese in the Phillipines. became Christians and Spaniards. I also remember that Dodoy had a centenarian great grandfather in their home in Turuk, Santa Maria, Bulacan, when I went there in 1973 or 1974. Thank you to my cousin Joseph Miller for clarifying for me the position of Dr. Virgilio Mauricio.
